Beike,
a bio-technology company that was founded with capital from Beijing
University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Shenzhen
City Hall and supported by funds from the China State National Fund, is
ready to treat its first non-asian foreign patients. Their research and
clinical work comes as a collaboration of Beijing University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology,
No. 3 Army Medical University, Zhongshan Medical University, Guiyang
Medical College and Zhenghou University. Throughout all of their
collaborating laboratories, they have around 60 P.h.D. level or
candidate level researchers focusing on stem cell research. Currently
they are in their clinical trial phase for foreign patients after
treating more than 350 Chinese patients which means their first foreign
patients will only need to pay the hospital charges for treatment. They
are currently looking for western brain damage patients, stroke patients, and cerebral palsy patients. The
hospital stay is about 20 to 30 days with three to four injections. Patients who
are interested can send feedback here.
As of July 1st, 2005, they treated 362 patients with stem cell
injections with the most being for ALS (89), Brain Trauma (32),
Cerebral Infarction (36), Cerebral Hemorrhage (20), Cerebral Palsy (20)
and diabetic foot (152). They treat patients at hospitals in Chongqing,
Shenyang, Qingdao, Shen Zhen and Zheng Zhou and, concentrating on using
chord blood stem cells for treatment.
The treatment
involves injections into the spinal cord fluid and are relatively
painless. Some transcripts from their treatments are available in the
patient experiences part of this web site. There are some before and
after videos of a brain damage and stroke patient as well.
The
China Stem Cell Staff has met ALS, brain damage and stroke patients who
have received the treatment and have witnessed some treatments, before
during and after. The ALS treatments seem to be about the same in
effectiveness as Dr. Huang's treatments with the patients regressing in
three to eight months. The two brain damaged patients we have seen have
made the most impressive improvements and along with the stroke
patients do not seem to regress - or at least from what we are told and
from what we seen in a six month time frame and from talking to the
patientes.
The group is run by Dr. Hu who was in
Sweden for many years and returned back to China recently. He
understands the requirements of Westerners in terms of facilities and
quality of care. This is why they are treating patients at the Nan Zhan
hospital in Shen Zhen. The medical equipment is of internation
standard. One member of the Stem Cell China News group is a doctor from
the U.S. and has been to the facilities and feels they are up to
standard along with the doctors. The actual injections of this nature
can be done by residents in the U.S. as it is a very simple procedure.
However, in case of an emergency, it is important that the facilities
and staff are of international standard.
