Objective: To observe the effect of olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) transplantation on spinal cord axonal regeneration.

Method: Twenty rats were divided into two groups, each group had ten rats. Three days after SCI models were made, OECs suspension, purified from SD rat olfactory bulb, was transplanted into the injured spinal cords at T10 level, while the vehicle solution (DMEM/ F12) was injected in the control group. At 6 weeks after transplantation, the samples were procured and studied with histological and immunohistochemical methods.

Result: Morphology of transplanted OECs was almost normal, and OECs arrangement is good in the host. Axons could regenerate into the place of injured spinal cords. Both OECs and regrown axons were immunoreactive for MBP. No regenerated axons were found in the controls.

Conclusion: Delayed transplanted OECs could integrate with the host and promote re-growing axons in adult rats’ spinal cord.
