P A T I E N T I N T E R V I E W - A U T I S M NAME: Calsun Wang
AGE: 8
COUNTRY: U.S.A.
DIAGNOSIS: Autism
REASON FOR COMING FOR TREATMENT: Calsun has autism and showed signs of it from when he was two years old. His family described him as being in his own world and not communicative with others. TREATMENT: Umbilical Cord Stem Cell and Nerve Growth Factor Injections with Rehabilitation Therapy
START OF TREATMENT: January 2, 2006 BEFORE THE TREATMENT: He was not communicative with others. He seldom spoke when spoken to or made eye contact with others. When you waved at him, he would not wave back. AFTER THE TREATMENT: (January 22, 2006) He became more sociable and made more eye contact than before. When you spoke to him, he would speak back to you which he would not do before. When you waved at him, he would wave back to you. These changes occurred by the fourth injection. The family was happy but is hoping for more as the doctors have told them that more improvements should happen in the following two months. We will check in with Calsum in March. See Video Interview with Brother.
See Calsun spell his name. May 29, 2006 Update: We visited with Calsun at his school while he was taking music class and spoke with his mother, Mrs. Wang. Since the treatment his mother has felt that he has made many improvements. The first is that he can speak in complete sentences with ten words or more instead of using one or two words. The second is that his attention span is better so that instead of having to be taught one-on-one, he can sit in a class and learn with other normally developed children. However, he is eight and most of the children in his class are 6 or 7. He also can now take care of others. His mother said that one day there was a class on helping others and when he got in the car that day on the way home, he helped his younger friend buckle his seat belt. He has also been chosen to have a part in a movie about a kids football team. Mrs. Wang said that none of this would have been possible before. The encouraging thing is that she said that since the stem cell treatments, the progress is continuing at a steady level and has not leveled off yet. However, she still would like to go for more treatments to try and making greater improvement. Calsun has still not reached the level of being able to play interactively with other children so she is hoping with more treatment, that he may eventually be able to get there.
