P A T I E N T  S T U D Y  -  A L S

Helene, husband and Priscilla
NAME:  Hélène Tougard

COUNTRY:  France

DIAGNOSIS:  Bulbar ALS

REASON FOR COMING FOR TREATMENT:  Diagnosed with ALS at the end of 2002

TREATMENT:  OEC Stem Cell Injections in the head.
START OF TREATMENT: December 24, 2004

BEFORE THE TREATMENT:  Patient could not talk and could make no sounds at all. She could not walk more than five meters and needed help. She could not drink and eating was an effort because food and liquid were going down the wrong pipe.

AFTER THE TREATMENT (Three months later):

Hélène Tougard:

My main improvement was the balance and there are a lot of fluctuations but when it goes down it always goes up to the same stage as after the surgery. I had a lot of check ups and the surgery did not damage my brain in any way and my neurologist accepts the fact that I am very stable. My balance changes every day - Today I feel like I can dance while yesterday I could not at all.

Improvements that do not vary:

* I can eat and food no longer goes down the wrong pipe.

* Strength: I have much more than before. I have a treadmill and before I was exhausted after one minute or about five meters. Now I walk 50 to 100 meters everyday depending on how tired I feel that day.

* I had very painful atrophy on my right wrist and it is now all gone.

* My right leg which was thinner than the left has started to regain volume.

* I can lay down on my back without having breathing problems.

* I have no more cramps in my larynx.

* My tongue is more mobile but I still have to push food down my throat.

* No more irritations in my throat due to smells like perfume, smoke, etc.

* I can stand noise when before I could not.

* My hands are stronger but my feet are still like chewing gum .

* 80% less cramps but this may also be due being able to exercise more.

* My speech appears one day and goes away the next but there is sound when there was none before. This was the miracle I had expected. However, when I can speak I have to speak in a quiet place and with people who are used to my strange speech

Anyhow, I don't regret anything because this surgery was the only hope in the world and if I could afford it, I would go back in awhile.
January 20, 2006 - China Stem Cell News has been informerd that Helene has passed away. When we last spoke with her, she had hurt her leg and had a cast on it which made it difficult for to keep active. Dr. Huang had welcomed her to come back for a second treatment at no cost but she was not able to get the energy to go. From our e-mail correspondence with her, we know she was a wonderful person and we will miss her greatly. Our thoughts go out to her family.
