SOME years ago, Allan Karim's life had purpose-he played sports with villagers, ran around to help others in need and looked forward to having a family.

Today, Karim, 36, is sitting in a wheelchair, paralysed from the chest down and praying that kind-hearted people will help him financially to afford surgery that could help him walk again.

A former Universal Printer press operator, Karim, of Todd's Road, Freeport, was involved in a road accident in 1996. The car overturned and Karim's neck was broken, causing the bone on the spinal cord to be squeezed inward, paralysing him instantly.

He spent five months at the Port of Spain General Hospital, and also had surgery at a private nursing home where "the bone was fused back in place, but I am still unable to move my legs".

"The pains in my hands eased a little, but I still cannot hold anything heavy in my hands. The local doctors did all that they could do for me, but they said they cannot make me walk again," he said.

Hope was rekindled in Karim's heart after he read a story about a young woman from Claxton Bay who was healed through stem cell treatment in China.

Karim contacted doctors at the Shenyang Hospital in China and forwarded his medical history to them. After studying the case, Dr Christine Taylor responded to Karim, stating that they could help him walk again.

The problem is that Karim now has to raise US$50,000, or more than TT$300,000, to have the stem cell treatment.

Karim hopes to go to China in August.

"Any help will go a long way in helping me heal," he said.
