PATIENT EXPERIENCE – M U L T I P L E S C L E R O S I S

See Jackie's Blog.

NAME: Jacqueline Kay (Jackie)

COUNTRY:
Australia

AGE: 50

DIAGNOSIS: Multiple Sclerosis

REASON FOR COMING FOR TREATMENT: The patient has suffered from MS symptoms since 1982 and was diagnosed in 1985. She was wheelchair bound and experienced a lot of pain.

TREATMENT: Umbilical Cord Stem Cell and Nerve Growth Factor Injections with Rehabilitation Therapy.

START OF TREATMENT: June 22, 2006

BEFORE THE TREATMENT:
The patient reported an increase in the severity of her symptoms in the five years prior to coming for treatment. The symptoms include numbness and absence of sensation in the feet and legs making balance difficult, compounded by a rigidity resulting in the complete inability to walk and stand unattended. In addition the recent onset of an 'amazing amount of pain' (video 'After 1') in the legs, that would get progressively worse as the day passed, made her physiological work and exercises more difficult. The patient's right hand has been numb but functional since around 1989. Her left eye had a light veil over it. Both eyes were sensitive to bright light. She often would wake at 2 or 3 a.m. and was unable to go back to sleep.

AFTER THE TREATMENT
(July 19th):

See Videos: After 1, After 2, After 3

Significant improvements were recorded in several areas, primarily the legs. The painful sensation ceased. Rigidity reduced to the degree that the patient not only regained the ability to exercise, but also to stand and walk short distances. The numbness that had affected her balance dissipated. Three additional improvements are well documented in the video series 'After 1/2/3'. Firstly, the patient describes a physio session in which she lay horizontally on her stomach and raised her legs until they were perpendicular with her body, which she claims was the first time in three years. Secondly, the numbness in her right hand that she had not considered an issue as it did not affect her daily life also dissipated. Thirdly, a problem only identified during the course of treatment as a result of its sudden improvement - the patient did not realise her necessity to remain close to a toilet constituted a medical condition, but found an increase in bladder control that by her admission, will bring about an increase in her quality of life.

China Stem Cell News Note: Jackie had part of her treatment in Nanshan hospital in Shenzhen and the rest of it at Beike's stem cell treatment center in Qingdao. While most of the 2008 Olympic events will be held in Beijing, Qingdao is the site for the Olympic Sailing Competition. Jackie has a worldwide non-profit community sailing program called Sailability which makes it easy for all types of people - including disabled, old, young, rich and poor - to be able to sail quickly and easily. Jackie decided she wanted to go to Qingdao to start working to get her program set up there ahead of the Olympics. Her program was welcomed by top government officials and she made two television appearances.
