NAME: Nora FarkasNora

COUNTRY: Hungary

AGE: 9

DIAGNOSIS: Stroke causing Epilepsy

REASON FOR COMING FOR TREATMENT: Nora was a premature baby who was born after a 25 week pregnancy which caused a serious stroke resulting in damage to the corpus callosum and cortex. Two weeks later she had an operation and they implanted a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. Her parents had heard about other Hungarian families getting improvement for their children with similar problems at from the Beike treatment, so they decided to try it.

TREATMENT: Umbilical cord stem cell and nerve growth factor injections with rehabilitation therapy.

START OF TREATMENT: June 17, 2006

BEFORE THE TREATMENT: Nora suffered from epilepsy which was balanced by Trileptal and Lamictal antiepileptics so there were not any attacks at all. She could not speak but she understood everything, and she could not chew food. She could walk but not in a stable manner. She was a mentally handicapped child as her developmental ability was very slow. She was not toilet-trained. She had the mentality of a two to three year old child. Her fine motor skills were lacking. She could only say simple letters like a and o. Her attention span was quite short. Her parents would have to repeat things twenty to thirty times for her to remember them. She could only pay attention to the TV for five or ten minutes. She would not obey commands.

AFTER THE TREATMENT:
(August 11th) She was able to walk and run better. She could jump. She could focus on objects longer. She could watch and listen to her favorite video twice a day for one hour a day. She was able to follow a story better than before. She could obey commands better.

EMAIL FROM SEPTEMBER 17th: We are very happy that we chose this option to go for stem cells treatments.

First of all, her personality has been changing in a positive direction, she is very nice, affectionate, and she gives a lot of kisses to everybody whom she loves. Everyday we can see new improvements in her. For example, she tries to do things independently that she could not do before like drinking her milk absolutely alone which she could not do before and she is very proud to be able to do so.

She is now very calm and all of the fits of anger that she had before the treatment.
It's very easy to teach her, because she understands and memorizes things in an instant, and it's not necessary to tell her again and again.

She can walk much better than before. She can tolerate uneven ground well but there is a problem with her Achilles' tendon. It's too short and because of this she sometimes walks on tiptoe.

I hope that the massage that I mentioned will help her to expand her Achilles' tendons.

She can jump on two legs in quick succession (before the treatment she could jump only one time. Now she can jump so much that she can do it all through a big room. In other words, her stability has become much better.

The toilet training and speech are the same as before and there are no significant changes in these two areas.

The best thing is that we can discover small new changes everyday. And all the people can tell at a glance that Nora has became much more intelligent.

We plan to go back for another treatment at the end of December (after Christmas) or at the beginning of January.

UPDATE - AUGUST 2007

In August, Nora Farkas returned with her family to Hangzhou, China to undergo a second course of stem cell therapy. Last time her parents were pleased with improvements in her ability to balance, and improvements in her cognitive processing and behaviour. At the beginning of this course of treatment, Nora and her family were eager to see improvements in these areas, specifically in her ability to walk and her intellect. Her father acknowledged that after the first course of treatments, improvements to his daughter's physical and mental abilities tended to diminish, eventually stopping completely around two-and-a-half months after the end of treatment.

START OF TREATMENT:
August 2007

COURSE OF TREATMENT:
8 umbilical cord blood stem cell injections with rehabilitation therapy.

WATCH VIDEOS OF NORA DURING THE SECOND COURSE OF TREATMENT:

AFTER THE SECOND COURSE OF TREATMENT: Nora expericenced improvements in both physical and mental areas. Firstly, her balance and ability to walk improved. This is evident in the fact that
she can now ascend a medium incline unaided, and climb stairs with minimal assistance. Her father gave an assessment of her mental improvements in the final interview, suggesting improvements in her mental ability. More specifically he said he could see improvements in her erratic sleeping patterns and her behaviour. Nora's family anticipate a gradual decrease in the amount of improvement over the coming months.

WATCH VIDEOS OF THE FINAL INTERVIEW OF NORA'S SECOND TREATMENT COURSE:
The final interview is split into three sections due to its large filesize.
